Full of the Joys of Spring

September 7, 2014 By sue 2 Comments

I just love Spring.  I love to see the early flowers blooming and to be able bring huge bunches of scented freesias inside.  The garden starts to look bright rather than winter drab even when many of the trees are still without leaves.  Particularly spectacular are those trees that flower before the leaves appear, like magnolia (which is scented as well) and our native kowhai.  And best about the kowhai flowers are that they bring the tuis flocking to get their fill of nectar, so intent on their task that they ignore me just feet away.  It is wonderful to have these magnificent birds swooping around the garden with their unmistakable rush of feathers and their amazing range of joyful song.  I have two pairs enjoying my kowhai and chasing each other round and through the trees.  The dawn chorus has certainly stepped up a notch recently with their presence.  I remind myself that I love flowers in the garden and that I must make sure that I still have plenty of them throughout the year even though I am increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables.
