I’ve previously tried other cosmetic products with simpler recipes such as Mango Body Butter but Rich Rose Geranium Body Butter was my first attempt at making a more complicated cosmetics recipe that involved combining various phases at different temperatures. It was not particularly successful but I thought I’d share my learnings with you:
- The hardest part was trying to coordinate the temperatures of the different phases so that they reached the desired temperature at the same time. The oil phase takes quite a while to cool down after melting but you can adjust the water phase more easily.
- I discovered again that my stick blender was not powerful enough to blend and thicken the mix. I changed to using an electric beater and it seemed to do the trick but after a while in the pot the body butter started to lose its ‘fluffiness’ and sank down in volume.
- I was disappointed with the resulting body butter because it left a very sticky finish on the skin. This recipe has a higher proportion of beeswax than others that I’ve seen and wonder whether that was the culprit? I got my recipe from Go Native but I didn’t use their beeswax so perhaps mine wasn’t prepared properly for use in a cosmetic?
- Although I love the smell of rose geranium and have used the oil regularly in baths or burners, I found the smell of this body butter to be too ‘artificial’ smelling for my liking but I don’t know what that is due to as they are all natural ingredients and I didn’t identify the smell in individual ingredients.
