Mulled Wine Pickled Cherries

January 16, 2026 By sue Leave a Comment

Cover with the liquid and seal

To me, cherries always indicate that summer is here. I’d love to be able to grow them in my garden but have to content myself with buying them by the box-load and then looking for ways to enjoy them throughout the year. I’ve made lots of different sweet recipes for cherries (see below) so I was intrigued to discover this recipe for pickled cherries that can be enjoyed with a cheeseboard or with meats. 400g cherries 100ml red wine vinegar 250ml red wine 3 tbsp sugar 2 star anise 1 … [Read more...]

Cherry Compote Recipe

Serve Cherry Compote with Pancakes

I just love cherries!! and anyway I can find to extend the season of enjoyment is good with me. This time I share a Cherry Compote Recipe. Compotes are fresh or dried fruits cooked slowly in a sugar syrup to retain their shape. Compotes frequently contain wine or liqueur: I've seen them cooked with red wine or with kirsch. This recipe contains brandy but the alcohol is boiled away just leaving the flavour behind. 1kg pitted cherries (approx 1.25kg to start with) 500g jam sugar (that has … [Read more...]

Cherry Pie Recipe

Bake until golden brown

Inspired by the Berry Pie Baking Kit I got for Christmas, I decided to make a larger Cherry Pie recipe to make the most of the cherry season (not from my garden unfortunately). If you follow my posts you will know that I have a real penchant for cherries and often freeze them and/or preserve them so that I can extend my enjoyment of the season. I'll include links to other recipes at the bottom of this post. I was lazy this time and just used store-bought sweet short pastry but if you have the … [Read more...]

Cherry & Almond Muffins

Cherry & Almond Muffins

Cherry & Almond Muffins are a little burst of summer that you can enjoy in winter and you can use almond meal left over from making Almond Milk. Cherries are a favourite of mine but the season is so short. I try to extend enjoyment of them by freezing or preserving them so that I can use them throughout the year. When I had some almond meal left over from making Almond Milk, I immediately thought of my cherries in the freezer and of making muffins. You could use tinned cherries … [Read more...]

Cherry Hazelnut Cake Recipe

Cherry & Hazelnut Cake

Try this delicious cherry & hazelnut cake recipe if you've had enough of eating fresh cherries this summer (is that possible?) or use frozen or tinned cherries.  Eating cherries is a part of summer that I always look forward to but I often freeze some cherries whole (taking the pits out using an olive stoner) so that I can make recipes like this over the winter as well. The cake itself also freezes well - I have frozen it in slices and just taken out a few slices to heat up and serve with … [Read more...]

Chocolate Cherry Tart Recipe

Chocolate Cherry Tart

Chocolate and cherries are a match made in heaven and this chocolate cherry tart recipe is perfect for a special occasion. I made it for Christmas day and served it surrounded by lovely scrumptious fresh cherries that had just come into season and with some frangelico cream on the side. Be warned though, the dark chocolate makes it an extremely rich dessert so you only need a tiny piece. Even my nephews had to admit defeat - although it was at the end of a long afternoon of Christmas … [Read more...]

Black Forest Jam Recipe

June 2, 2016 By sue Leave a Comment

Cherries and Chocolate - a match made in heaven! This year I made the most of a good supply of cherries (sadly not from my garden) and froze them (taking the pits out with an olive pitter). Now I have the luxury of trying different cherry recipes when I feel like it. When I saw this Black Forest Jam recipe I knew that I just had to make it (with a few adaptations). It has a lovely rich black forest flavour, not too chocolatey, not too sweet. 1 kg sweet black cherries (stones removed, … [Read more...]

Spiced Brandied Cherries

January 23, 2015 By sue Leave a Comment

Usually cherries are an absolute treat for me that are just eaten fresh and whole (and usually as quickly as possible).  But if you are lucky enough to have a sufficient quantity that you can't possibly gorge yourself on all of them without being ill, you may want to preserve some before they go off.  Spiced brandied cherries are great way to save the taste of summer to enjoy later in the year.  And use the pits to make Cherry Vinegar.   Spiced Brandied Cherries About 0.5 - 0.75 kg … [Read more...]
