I have recently been making a range of different fruit liqueurs with my homemade neutral spirits and fruit from my garden. Whilst not a fruit, I definitely couldn't go past trying a homemade Ginger Liqueur recipe when harvesting my ginger this year. This recipe certainly has a good level of gingery spiciness but the vanilla and orange, along with the brandy, add complexity and mellowness to the flavour. It is very definitely more-ish. 100g fresh ginger root 1 vanilla bean 1 cup … [Read more...]
Orange Liqueur Recipe
Over the past several weeks I've shared my forays into combining seasonal fruit from the garden with my efforts at making my own alcohol. This time it was using oranges. I've previously made a Homemade Grand Marnier recipe that infused oranges into brandy so this time I decided to try infusing the oranges into neutral spirit first and then distilling it to produce a clear spirit (or so I thought). 6 oranges 1L neutral spirit (vodka or preferably for more flavour using 'eau de vie' spirit … [Read more...]
Orange, Almond & Honey Cakes
Oranges, Almonds and Honey! Each delicious so they must be triply so together. It is orange season in the garden so I decided to try this recipe for Orange, Almond & Honey Cakes. Orange & Cinnamon Muffins
I love the quick simplicity of these orange & cinnamon muffins - you just put a whole orange into a food processor and then add the other ingredients. Quick and easy to make with oranges fresh from the garden or make in advance and keep in the freezer. 1 orange (or 2 if you like it really orangey) 1 egg 25g melted butter 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 cups flour 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 cup milk Topping 1 tsp cinnamon 2 tbsp sugar Remove any pips from the … [Read more...]
Orange Slice
With masses of citrus on my trees this year I have been searching for as many different recipes as I can from preserves to muffins, cakes and slices. This Orange Slice recipe is a bit too sweet for my liking but it is quick and easy, and keeps well in the freezer for taking as a plate or when guests come round. Cut it into small pieces so you can mix with other goodies on a plate. 1 cup desiccated coconut 250g Wine Biscuits 1 orange 1 lemon 100g butter 1/3 cup sweetened condensed … [Read more...]
Chocolate Orange Sherbet Slice Recipe
My navel orange tree was laden with fruit this year so I was searching for as many different orange recipes as I could find and this Chocolate Orange Sherbet Slice recipe grabbed my attention. Chocolate and orange go so wonderfully together and sherbet is the stuff of childhood memories so I had to give it a try. I stupidly didn't read the ingredients carefully and assumed that 500g dark chocolate was the amount in a packet of chocolate melts - it wasn't! The packet only had 400g so my … [Read more...]
Orange Jam Recipe
My navel orange tree, although still relatively small, produced a good crop this year so I decided to make some orange jam. I've previously made Whisky Orange Marmalade and Cointreau Orange Marmalade but wanted to try making a jam that had a sweeter orange flavour for a change rather than the tartness of marmalade. 6 oranges Water ( to make up 1.5 litres with the orange juice) Sugar (1 cup per cup of orange pulp) Wash and zest the oranges. I used a potato peeler but you could use a … [Read more...]
Whisky Orange Marmalade Recipe
If you make this recipe using Seville Oranges it will be the traditional bitter orange marmalade. I had lots of navel oranges on my tree and decided to try a couple of different variations to this recipe: one based on Whisky Seville Marmalade and another based on Mandarin Marnier Marmalade. I made the basic recipe and split it in half at the end, adding whisky to one half and cointreau to the other - you can make it all with one or the other or try another flavour altogether. 1kg Oranges 2 … [Read more...]

Dehydrating Citrus
In an earlier post I described my not very successful attempts at drying herbs in a dehydrator. I decided to give it another go, this time with citrus, after being inspired by some delicious dried lemon served as an edible garnish on a dessert at a function I went to. According to the instructions in the manual, you scrub whole fruit under warm water and then cut into 5mm slices. Well actually that was the instruction for lemons. For oranges, the instruction was to cut them into 0.5mm … [Read more...]
