My brother had his 50th birthday this year and I decided that I wanted to make him a Powertex Wall Art Tui. I have previously made a Powertex Wall Art picture of a wood pigeon for my outdoor space using the Powertex image transfer medium and was looking for a chance to do another one. My brother has paintings with circular centres of native birds and plants and I thought it would be great to make something for his new barbeque area that would tie in with these. I found a wonderful photo … [Read more...]
Powertex Wall Art
I tend to like my art works to be more realistic and lifelike (with some artistic license) rather than abstract, so when I have seen people at workshops creating abstract canvases with Powertex I hadn't been inspired to create any myself. But then at one workshop some people were making underwater scenes and I thought that this would be the perfect Powertex wall art for me. I had been looking for something suitable to put on my bathroom wall and it needed to be something fairly large and fit … [Read more...]
Powertex Abstract Figures
After I had been to a few Powertex workshops, I decided to buy some supplies so that I could make things at home as well. I also bought a few books for inspiration and decided to try out some of the designs so that I could practice different techniques. Although my preference is usually things that are nature inspired and tending more towards realism than abstract, there were a couple of funky abstract figures that caught my eye so I decided to give them a go. These figures used polystyrene … [Read more...]
Powertex Fossil
When I first bought some Powertex products for myself (rather than just attending workshops) I thought that I would try some different designs to learn different techniques and approaches. I had found a tutorial on-line (that of course I can't find the link to now) of a fossil that I quite liked (that is actually pictured on the front of the Powertex Stone Art container). Stone Art powder is sort-of like papier mache that when mixed with Powertex fabric hardener forms a clay-like substance. I … [Read more...]
Powertex Tui Sculpture
I had been planning to make a Powertex Tui Sculpture ever since I saw one at the Powertex stand at the SENZ craft expo but somehow I just hadn't got around to making one even though I had the materials for it. Then I heard that Joanne was running another workshop in my area and decided to go along. I usually do Powertex workshops with my friend Dominique but she was back visiting her parents in France, so I went by myself this time. There were 6 of us in the workshop and of course Joanne and her … [Read more...]
Powertex Wall Art for the Garden
When I have attended previous Powertex workshops, I have seen other people make abstract canvases but haven't been inspired to try them myself. Then I asked our instructor Joanne's husband Nick whether he ever made any Powertex sculptures himself or whether he was content to make the supporting hardware for us all. He said that he really enjoyed using Powerprint - a laserprint transfer medium that allows you to transfer a photograph to your canvas - and told me about one that he had made of tuis … [Read more...]
Powertex Fish Sculpture
Making a fish sculpture: My brother's 50th birthday is this year and I really wanted to make something special for him that was personal to him and to me. He is really into boating and things nautical, and they have an outdoor barbeque area that lends itself to wall decoration, so I thought that I would make a fish sculpture to go on the wall. I have described previously my first efforts at making Powertex figurines; this time I thought I would try making a fish sculpture. I decided that … [Read more...]
Making Powertex Figurines
I described in an earlier post the workshop I had attended to learn how to make Powertex figurines. I had been very keen to make a pair of African-style figurines after having been inspired by the tall elegant figures I had seen at a craft show, but there wasn't time to make two at the workshop so I purchased the materials to make another one at home. With a long weekend at hand, it was a perfect time to give it a go before I forgot what we had done at the workshop. I had made a graceful … [Read more...]
Powertex Figurine Workshop
I first came across Powertex a couple of years ago when I visited a SENZ craft expo and the tall elegant African-style figurines took my eye. I was keen to do a workshop but didn't manage to connect with the dates when they were in Auckland. This year I was re-inspired when I saw them again at SENZ and was determined to give it a go. My friend Dominique was also keen to make a figurine (not an African one) and so when there was a workshop in my area we signed up. The workshop runs all day … [Read more...]
