I have developed a great liking for walnuts after being put off in the past by ones that were really past their best. There is nothing like the taste of a fresh walnut and you may have noticed that I have been making lots of different recipes using them recently (see bottom of post for links to walnut recipes). Today's recipe is an easy to make Ginger Walnut Biscuits recipe. 125g butter 1/3 cup white sugar 1 tbsp golden syrup 1 cup flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 cup … [Read more...]
Roast Pumpkin, Barley & Walnut Salad
This Roast Pumpkin, Barley & Walnut Salad is a great salad for winter when you can serve it slightly warm for a very satisfying light meal or to accompany a main dish. I make it after I have made Lemon Barley Water Cordial and have the cooked pearl barley left over. I freeze the pearl barley in approx 1 cup quantities ready to use in salads, soups and stews. 1 cup cooked pearl barley* 400g pumpkin Olive oil Large handful of parsley 100g feta 1/3 cup walnuts Lemon Dressing 3 tbsp … [Read more...]
Cauliflower Walnut Bake
No matter how much I try to spread out the planting of broccoli and cauliflower seedlings, they all seem to become ready at once. Although they both do freeze well so it is not a catastrophe, I'm always keen to have a good range of recipes to make things with them. This Cauliflower Walnut Bake is absolutely delicious. 1 medium cauliflower 1 cup sour cream (you can add a tsp of lemon juice to some cream to make this) 1 cup grated cheese of your choice 1 tbsp flour 2 tsp chicken stock … [Read more...]
Walnut & Banana Bread Recipe

There seems to be a lot of confusion about what the difference actually is between banana cake, banana loaf and banana bread. A … [Read more...]
‘The Queens’ Date & Walnut Cake Recipe
In an earlier post I talked about the fresh walnuts I had got from Alberton House. I still had some walnuts left to use and I remembered the deliciously light Date & Walnut Cake recipe that my friend Vicky had made for my birthday. I asked Vicky for the recipe and was delighted to discover that it was in an old hand-written recipe book and mysteriously titled "The Queens Recipe" (she had no idea why it was called this). After a bit of searching I discovered that there are various stories … [Read more...]
Walnut & Coffee Cake Recipe
I would love to be able to grow my own walnuts but the trees are just too big for an average suburban garden. Fortunately Alberton Historic House has a walnut tree in its grounds and sells bags of walnuts from its Verandah Store, so I can at least get locally grown walnuts. They provided several walnut recipes along with the bag of walnuts, one of which was this Walnut & Coffee Cake recipe - I just had to make it. Alberton House was built in 1863 and was originally a 2 storey farmhouse in … [Read more...]
