Making Bath Salts

October 21, 2014 By sue Leave a Comment

Making bath salts is very easy – perfect for kids to make.  They are always a welcome gift for soothing tired muscles and healing the skin. They also neutralise your skin so that the fragrant oils cling to it and smell wonderful for hours.  A fragrant relaxing bath is a great way to de-stress and an affordable luxury.

The basic recipe is:

P10405981 cup Epsom Salts

1 cup Coarse Sea Salt

10-20 drops essential oils* (I usually prefer to put in double the amount)

10 drops food colouring or soap dye (I find that with food colouring the colour fades quite quickly)

Place the salts in a large bowl and mix well.  Scoop out about 1/2 in a small bowl.  Add the oils and colouring to the salts in the small bowl and mix well.  Add this mixture back to the large bowl a little at a time.  Repeat if necessary to get the desired colour strength.  Pour into a glass jar with a tight fitting lid and shake every day for a week before packaging**.

Add about 1/3 cup of bath salts to running bath water.

* Some nice blends:

  • Refreshing and energising: 20 drops peppermint oil and 10 drops eucalyptus oil
  • Soothing: 20 drops camomile and 10 drops ylang-ylang
  • Victorian Rose: 20 drops rose, 6 drops lavender, 4 drops clove
  • Fresh Floral: 20 drops bergamot, 10 drops jasmine, 10 drops rose

** If making with children, you can put the finished bath salts into a cellophane bag for an inexpensive option and let them have fun creating their own labels

Or pour into interesting jars and decorate appropriately or include in a themed gift pack.
