Making Sugar Scrubs

December 18, 2015 By sue Leave a Comment

When I was making lavender and other flavoured sugars and syrups, I was reminded that too much sugar is bad for us.  But this recipe is a use for sugar that really is good for you!  You can make a luxurious and beneficial skin treatment that is used in top end spas – and for a fraction of the price.

A sugar scrub is a body treatment designed to exfoliate the skin, removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells and leaving your skin softer and smoother. It is one of the gentlest of all the different types of body scrubs (such as sea salt or rice bran).  A sugar scrub is a good choice if you have sensitive skin.

A sugar scrub also hydrates your skin because the sugar is combined with oil and often an aromatic and uplifting essential oil like lavender, rose geranium, or grapefruit.

This recipe uses deep red rose petals to give a wonderful colour as well as some scent.  I added some drops of rose essential oil as well to give a lovely heady smell that just makes you feel luxuriant.

1.5 cups of plain white sugar
1/4 cup of oil (you can use almost any oil: olive oil, almond oil, even baby oil if you wish)
12 rose petals (optional or try a couple of tbsp lavender flowers)
a few drops of essential oil if desired

Put all the ingredients in a small blender and pulse until well combined.  Transfer to a decorative jar.

To Use:
Wash your skin with soap or body wash and rinse well. Then apply a sufficient amount of sugar scrub to wet skin over your entire body, massaging in a circular motion to allow the granules to remove dead skin cells. Finally, rinse off well. This makes your skin look and feel refreshed and healthy.  I was skeptical to start with but your skin really does feel wonderful afterwards.
