A solid moisturiser stick is a great option for travelling (and many other activities) and this recipe is very easy to make yourself.
I tend to have dry skin and use lots of moisturiser, but when I travel I always struggle to work out how much I need to take with me. Most moisturisers are considered gels or liquids so you are limited in how much you can take on the plane with you, and because they are gels or liquids you are also carrying around extra weight in the form of water. I usually end up with a motley selection of small containers of moisturiser that I have collected from various hotels, with the intent that I dispose of the finished containers along the way to lighten the load and reduce the amount of space taken up. Up till now I hadn’t really found a better option. I discovered this recipe for a solid moisturiser stick on the Go Native Website. The recipe makes enough for one of the deodorant tubes that you can also purchase from them along with the ingredients. It is so quick and simple to make (and of course you can easily scale the recipe up if you want to make more of them).
Ingredients
20g shea butter
20g kokum butter
20g beeswax
15g meadowfoam oil
2 drops essential oil or fragrance oil (optional)
Method
1. Melt all the butters and oil together.
2. Add the essential or fragrance oil.
3. Pour into the tube and leave to set.
- Melt ingredients over low heat
- Pour into deodorant tube
- Leave to cool
- Your solid moisturiser stick is ready to use
I have to admit I was a little skeptical about what a solid moisturiser would be like to use but it does feel really nice. It is a bit like using a body butter – the moisturiser stick melts against the heat of your skin and leaves a thin film on your skin as you move the stick around. It absorbs well and doesn’t leave a greasy oil slick behind on your skin. It lasts really well and although I haven’t put it to the full test yet, I am confident it will last me for a month away.
Great idea Sue. Will have to think about it next time we travel.
