This year my thornless blackberry has provided me with more blackberries than I can every remember having so I’ve definitely been seeking new recipes to try. This blackberry gin recipe isn’t exactly new as I’ve made the same recipe with raspberries and blueberries previously but I had never made a blackberry gin. I made a double recipe that makes about 1500ml of blackberry gin (and didn’t waste the berries at the end as I used them to make blackberry jam).

Home-made Gin
You can use any gin for the recipe; I used some of my homemade gin: the Bay Leaf Blend with juniper berries, coriander seeds, citrus peels (lemon, orange), dried bay leaves, liquorice root
Put 1l vodka in a jar, add botanicals and leave to steep 24 hours.
Strain the botanicals out using a filter paper lined funnel.
Bottle and label.
700 ml gin
250g blackberries (can use frozen)
125g caster sugar
Put all the ingredients into a jar with a sealable lid. Store in a cool, dark place for a month, shaking gently every day for the first week, then once a week to dissolve the sugar. (I only left it for a week this time and it still developed good colour and flavour).
Strain the gin through a muslin-lined sieve but don’t mash the fruit as it will make the gin cloudy. Decant into sterilised bottles (use a fancy bottle if giving for a gift).
- Weigh blackberries
- Add to gin with sugar and leave to stand for 1-4 weeks
- Then strain through cloth

Pour into bottles; enjoy with tonic or soda
