I’m ‘on a roll’ at the moment, replenishing my first aid cabinet with handmade balms and creams. Continuing the ‘theme’ of tending to gardening injuries, this time I tried making a Natural Muscle Rub. This recipe come courtesy of Go Native New Zealand who have lots of great recipes on their website as well as supplying all the ingredients of course.
This Natural Muscle Rub is described as “a 100% natural, fiery muscle rub that absorbs quickly and deeply to soothe aching arms and legs. Great for post-workout!”
50g | 50% olive oil
15g | 15% beeswax
10g | 10% castor oil
10g | 10% eucalyptus blue gum essential oil
5g | 5% capsicum oleoresin
4g | 4% peppermint essential oil
3g | 3% camphor essential oil
2g | 2% cajeput essential oil
1g | 1% clove bud essential oil
Alternatively, replace all essential oils with 25g | 25% muscle rub essential oil blend from Go Native NZ. This makes it very easy and you don’t have odd amounts of essential oils that you might not use for anything else.
Melt the olive oil, beeswax and castor oil gently.
Take off the heat**These essential oils can meet their flash point so they must be taken off the heat.
Add the essential oils and stir to combine.
Pour into a pot and let set. Makes 100g .
Note: this recipe is very effective as a muscle rub but I have decided not to make it again because I am concerned about the red colour staining clothing. I also seem to be quite sensitive to something in there that really stings my skin and lingers to transfer to eyes and lips even after I wash my hands. I will share in a separate post the ‘Tiger Balm muscle rub’ recipe that I now prefer.
- Melt the oils and beeswax
- Go Native’s Muscle Rub Essential Oil blend
- Stir in the essential oils
- Pour into containers
- Muscle rub and Tiger Balm
